Incline Village, Nevada

With the lake, mountains, and nearby high desert to the east, there’s plenty to see and do out of doors year round. Despite the almost pristine wilderness that surrounds Incline Village, the community is only a short drive from Tahoe City, Carson City and Reno, with their casinos, nightlife, entertainment, arts, and culture.

Location
In the westernmost part of Northern Nevada’s Washoe County, Incline Village is on the northern shore of Lake Tahoe near the California State Line.

Geography/Terrain
Hugging the shores of Lake Tahoe in the rocky tree covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, Incline Village is found in one of the most scenic parts of the country.

Distance to 3 Closest Major Cities
Carson City is 15 miles east of Incline Village and Reno is 21 miles. Tahoe City, CA is about 10 miles west and south, on Lake Tahoe’s western bank.

Housing
Incline Village is the only planned community development in the Tahoe Basin and as such it is a highly sought after place to live. Upscale homes, many of them lakeside, characterize this elegant community, which is known for its sensitive planning and great natural beauty. Real estate inventory tends to be low at any given time but the special homes here make it worth the wait for buyers. While single family dwellings make up the majority of homes in Incline, condos are also available, and their relatively affordable price range renders them particularly popular with retirees and holidaymakers.

Parks/Sports/Recreation/Golf
Stunningly beautiful alpine scenery and world class recreational opportunities are enjoyed year round by Incline Village residents, and local parks and recreation facilities are first rate.

Incline residents and their guests have the use of the community’s 3 private beaches on Lake Tahoe, where a full range of water sports are enjoyed. The Incline Village Recreation Center is the easily the finest in the Tahoe Basin, with an 8 lane heated swimming pool, a cutting edge fitness center and a substantial gym. Massage therapy is offered at the center, along with a comprehensive and varied recreational program. The local tennis center adjacent to the recreation center is also superb, with 11 courts in a beautiful wooded setting and a wide range of classes offered by professional coaches. The center also has an Olympic-sized pool and a children’s wading pool, and hosts a range of events in summer, including the annual Incline Open (now in its 25th year), the NTRP Tournament, ATP Pro Exhibition events, and a yearly “Breakfast at Wimbledon” celebration. Skateboarders are also catered for in Incline, and have a brand new, state-of-the-art skateboard park to enjoy.

Incline Village also has much to offer the golf enthusiast. The Incline Village Golf Resort encompasses two world-class
courses, the par 73 Championship Course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Snr and the par 58 Mountain Course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jnr. Golf Digest have given Championship a 4 Star Rating, unsurprising for such a scenic and elegant course. Mountain’s ground-breaking design, which winds through the native pines, offers an exciting challenge. Accuracy is more important than distance here, making Mountain the perfect place to develop your shot making skills. Nearby courses include the Edgewood in Tahoe, rated one of the nation’s top 25 public golf courses by Golf Digest, and the Montreux Golf Club near Reno, home of the annual PGA Reno-Tahoe Open.

The wilderness surrounding Incline is studded with lakeside parks, picnic spots and hiking and biking trails. Summer brings swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking, water and jet skiing, playing at the water’s edge, and hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting and more. Winter sees some of the world’s finest cross-country and downhill skiing and other snow sports. Incline’s Diamond Peak Ski Resort offers local residents discounted rates and is a superb facility with a slope for each ability level, 30 runs, 7 chairlifts, a Gold-Medal winning ski shop, an excellent Child Ski Development Center, a comfortable base lodge, and top-notch instructors. Spectacular lake views give Diamond Peak’s slopes something special.

Nearby wilderness areas include the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park (about 4 miles east and south), Burton Creek State Park (about 10 miles southeast) and Donner Memorial State Park in the Sierra Nevada Range.

Special Attractions/Events
Incline residents make the most of their stunning alpine lake location, enjoying art, music and dance classes, community learning activities and a fully range of recreational pursuits. Incline’s sizable senior community enjoys the Recreation Department’s wide range of programs, which include fitness and creativity classes and outings; the Recreation Department also coordinates numerous classes and activities for children, teenagers, and adults.

Seasonal celebrations and local sporting events are marked by the community; larger annual events include the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood Tahoe in nearby Stateline, which draws well known actors, celebrities and sporting giants and is known as the “Super Bowl of Celebrity Sports”. The annual Camel Races in nearby Virgina City is another exciting yearly event.

Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places
The Tahoe Basin’s only developed community, Incline Village is a relatively recent settlement, first authorized in 1961 and gradually built out since. Washoe County authorized the addition of recreation facilities in 1967, and in June 1968 the Incline Village General Improvement District (developers) bought Burnt Cedar Beach and Incline Beach from the Crystal Bay Development Company for $2.1 million, levying residents for their upkeep and upgrade.

IVGID purchased the village’s 2 golf courses and ski incline in 1976, developing them extensively over the following decades until they became the world-class facilities Incline is famous for today. The Tennis Center was first built in 1977 and upgraded in 2003; the Recreation Center was built in 1991. The award winning Burnt Ceder Pavilion was built in 2000, and the superb skateboard park in 2001. A new Chateau was begun in 2003, and extensive upgrades were made at Diamond Peak; in 2004 the Chateau was opened to widespread acclaim.

A great deal of community input goes into developments at Incline, which has been run by an elected board of trustees and a general manager since its inception. Its first strategic plan for the future was developed in 1999, and the Recreation Facilities Master Plan was completed in 2000. The Board of Trustees adopted a Strategic Management Plan to continue the community’s tradition of sensitive development in 2006.

Just south of Incline Village stands Thunderbird Lodge, an interesting historic landmark from the nineteen-thirties. Built by developer turned conservationist George Whittell, Thunderbird was originally intended to be an upscale holiday resort but Whittell fell in love with his beautiful 40,000 acres and preserved them for future generations. The Lodge’s several buildings reflect the best of their day and reflect Whittell’s insistence that they merge agreeably into their natural surroundings.
