The spring season often marks when celebrities are nominated for awards and when some of the most viewed award shows are broadcasted around the world. Before you tune in to root for your favorite artists, actors, and performances, we’re wondering, can you name the celebrities with ties to Reno and Northern Nevada?

 

  1. Adam Cates – Cates is a director, choreographer, playwright, and best-selling author who has worked on Tony-winning shows on Broadway.
  2. Ben Erway – Erway was a popular actor in the 40s and 50s with roles on The Twilight Zone and The Bishop’s Wife.
  3. Bryce Johnson – The acting reel of Johnson features many guest appearances in a variety of popular T.V. series, but he is most known for his role in Popular.
  4. Chase Ellison – This actor got his start in acting at a young age by appearing on Malcolm in the Middle and 7th Heaven. He also went on to star in Mysterious Skin, Tooth Fairy, and The Boy Who Cried Werewolf.
  5. Curtis Hanson – After getting some small films under his belt, Hanson then went on to direct well-known films like The River Wild, L.A. Confidential, and 8 Mile.
  6. Dawn Wells – Wells is known for playing the beloved character of Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island.
  7. Gabriel Damon – From being the voice of Littlefoot in The Land Before Time to rolls on Star Trek: The Next Generation and ER, Damon has a great history in the industry.
  8. Jaylen Barron – Barron began her acting career with guest spots on popular Disney shows like Shake It Up and Good Luck Charlie. She also appeared in a few episodes of Shameless before landing her big role in Free Reign.
  9. Jena Malone – Born in Sparks, Malone has had a successful acting career. Some of her most well-known works include Stepmom and The Hunger Games series.
  10. Kristoffer Polaha – This actor and producer was born in Reno and is known for Jurassic World: Dominion, Wonder Woman 1984, and Where Hope Grows.
  11. Mädchen Amick – Amick is known for her roles in Twin Peaks and Riverdale.
  12. Ron Thomas – Thomas is known for his acting in Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid.

  1. Reno has repeatedly been named one of the 10 sunniest cities in the United States and usually averages more than 300 days of sunshine every year.
  2. When compared to other ski towns in North America, the Reno Tahoe area has the highest number of ski resorts scattered throughout its short distance.
  3. Lake Tahoe covers 191 square miles and is so deep that you could stand the Empire State Building in it and not see its top.
  4. Sparks hosts the largest rib cookoff in the country. While the rib cookoff is one of our favorite summer events, it also draws in hundreds of thousands of people year after year and serves more than 240,000 pounds of ribs, making it the largest in the United States.
  5. Blue jeans were born in Reno. Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss partnered to meet the demand for sturdier pants, and it was the start of creating the favorite pair of jeans hanging in your closet today.
  6. The largest free hot air ballooning event in the world happens to be the Great Reno Balloon Race! With close to a hundred balloons coming to participate every year, it brings in over 100,000 people to check out the shows, races, and festivities throughout the weekend of the event.
  7. Reno has been a Tree City USA for 28 years, which means that the community has made strides to manage and expand its public trees in order to benefit and protect the environment.
  8. A number of films, TV shows, and music videos have been filmed in the Reno area. Some of the most notable movies include The Misfits, Pink Cadillac, and Sister Act.
  9. In 2014, Reno hosted 550 people playing checkers in order to win the world record for the most people playing checkers at one time.
  10. Before starting his illustrious career as a world-renowned author, Mark Twain worked as a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City for several years.
