Construction Update: 3 Projects Happening Around Reno

It’s likely that on your drive to work and on your way to meet up with friends you’ve seen some of the construction happening around town. There are a lot of projects currently underway and they can bring more growth and opportunity for the community. Below are some of the developments you should know about.

 

Aloft Hotel
Located immediately adjacent to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a 164-key Aloft hotel that will be the first tech-forward lifestyle hotel in Reno. Aloft falls under the Marriott International hotel umbrella, and Reno will be the company’s first Nevada location. The hotel is said to come with a vast array of amenities including portable breakfast pots instead of continental breakfast, live music in the lounge performed by indie artists, and towels and toiletries delivered by a robot butler. Rooms will also feature 9-foot ceilings, rainfall showerheads and pet-friendly touches for dogs under 40 pounds. The target opening date is set for sometime in the spring of 2020.

 

Chase Bank
Chase Bank has been very open about the desire to expand the company’s reach in Nevada, which is why the newest branch will be coming to Spanish Springs. While the permits were issued back in March, construction hasn’t quite happened yet. It’s hard to say when this second Sparks location will open up, but it’s a big step in Chase’s plans to join the Northern Nevada community.

 

ER at McCarran NW
North McCarran Boulevard will soon be the sight of a new emergency room, all part of Northern Nevada Medical Center’s expansion plans. There’s currently a shortage of doctors in the area and this construction project has hopes to remedy that. The 10,840-square-foot facility is expected to open sometime in 2020, and there are plans to work on models to increase access to behavioral health services.

 

There are so many exciting projects happening around town, and there are sure to be some great perks and growth opportunities that spring up as an effect of the construction. Reno's Got Good Vibrations

There’s a rumble and then a roar, and before you know it, the streets are shaking with the sounds from several engines grumbling down the block. Everywhere you go, you’ll see, hear, and feel hundreds of motorcycles joining the cars along the streets and kicking off one of Reno’s favorite fall events — Street Vibrations!

 

The last motorcycle rally of 2019 is coming September 25 and the events will finish up on September 29. If you’ve been to Street Vibrations before, you know that the fall rally takes it to a new level every year. With six outdoor stages, there’s amazing live entertainment to keep you entertained and rocking out while you explore the more than 250 vendors spread throughout downtown Reno.

 

The event doesn’t stop there! Scavenger hunts and poker runs are also included in the lineup, as well as a spectacular fireworks display in downtown Reno. For the true bike lovers, there’s a custom bike auction, bike builder’s show and competition, and even a tattoo expo.

If you can’t make it to downtown Reno, there are even some events happening in Virginia City, Carson City, and the Harley-Davidson stores in the area! There are some great headliners coming into town just for the festivities including Grand Marshal Erik Estrada who will head up the “Police on Parade.”

 

No matter if you come to the event for the outdoor concerts and vendors or to participate in some of the other activities, be sure to marvel at the bikes that are incredible pieces of art. Moving is never a fun experience. Sure, the thought of starting fresh and making a new space feel like home is exciting, but the process of boxing up your things and coordinating with movers is exhausting. We’ve all been there, but we have some tips on how you can make the move a little easier.

 

Good things come in twos – You may have heard that it’s best to begin planning for your move two months before the big day and get packing two weeks before. We’re here to tell you that this is the best way to take the stress out of your move. It’s common to want to procrastinate, but when you stretch the process and give yourself little tasks to tackle each day, you’re more likely to enjoy the process.

 

Make a list of everything you need to take care of – There’s a ton to do before the big move, and if you’re not careful, something can slip through the cracks. Make a checklist of everything you need to do. Include everything from updating your billing address to getting utilities and internet services set up in your new place and canceled in your old one.

 

Pack room by room – It’s easiest to begin packing up your home room by room, and be sure you label everything. Trust us, you won’t remember which “kitchen stuff” box has the blender that you need to have ready for your morning smoothies, so mark down the room and some of the important things that are in the box.

 

Measure your furniture – Not every home is created equal. You’ll want to make sure that your current furniture will fit in your new home. Look at the floorplan and begin preparing where items will go in your home. Your future self will thank you if you can drastically reduce the time it takes to unpack your home.

The fickle Reno and Tahoe weather can sometimes put a damper on your plans to get outdoors, but with so many trails, parks, and open landscapes, it’s a crime to stay indoors. So, before the first snowfall and on the days that the sun isn’t hidden by gloomy rain clouds, we have some spots you should explore!

Bike, Hike, and the Like

Mountain Biking Spots:

  • Tahoe Rim Trail offers a variety of terrain to suit a variety of riders at any skill level. Want to find some sand and silt, a few steep climbs, and downhill descents to try out? This trail has it all!
  • Picnic Rock Vista Ride is great for anyone looking for a leisure bike ride that offers some great sights. This 3-mile trip will ensure you leave with some great shots of Lake Tahoe and the pine forests that surround it.
  • Dry Pond Loop is a mountain biking spot at the base of Mount Rose with a challenging climb and an exhilarating descent. If it sounds too challenging for two wheels, you can try it on two feet — this spot is popular for hikers and joggers as well.
  • Hidden Valley Regional Park has a few mountain biking trail loops to choose from. Backcountry Loop will give your legs a workout, but Perimeter Loop and Highland Trail are great for beginner and intermediate riders.

Hiking Spots:

  • Bartley Ranch Loop Trail has some great views that overlook the city. You’ll be happy to reach the top of this 1.5-mile hike, trust us.
  • Hunter Creek Trail covers a variety of terrain, but at the end of the hike, there’s a big reward: a waterfall! The hike is just a little shy of 6 miles and is sure to get your heart pumping.
  • Peavine Peak Trail is perfect for the experienced hiker, and you can bring your four-legged best friend with you! The dog-friendly trail covers 8.5 miles and has an elevation gain of 2,834 feet. The views of Reno and Sparks that are unlike any other.
  • Cross Peak Trail is where you should go if you’re looking for the perfect photo opportunity. Save energy for the last quarter mile, it’s steep!

Reno offers so many visually appealing attractions, but none are more well known and beloved than the Great Reno Balloon Races – the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning event.

 

The three-day event kicks off September 6th and goes through the weekend. Before the event is over, you’re sure to catch more than just a glimpse of dozens of hot air balloons taking flight and dotting the sky with a variety of colors.

 

When the Great Reno Balloon Races first started in 1982, there were close to 20 balloons that soared above the city, but today there up to 100 balloons flying high around town. This community tradition is truly a spectacle and residents and tourists bond over their lack of sleep and desire for some strong coffee as they sit and watch the balloons take flight during Dawn Patrol.

 

Friday – Sunday, gates to the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park will open at 3:30 AM for the Super Glow Show to start at 5:00 and the Dawn Patrol to begin at 5:30 AM. It’s recommended to get there early to get a good seat and be sure to bundle up! The mornings can be a little more than brisk, but it can warm up once the sun peaks out during Dawn Patrol.

 

If you and your family would like to see the sky covered in balloons, stick around until 7 AM, when the pilots will have a mass ascension and take off in swarms to color the sky.

 

Just North of Downtown Reno, more than 120,000 spectators will gather over the three-day period to watch a show that gets bigger and better year after year. The Great Reno Balloon Races have even been awarded the “Best Special Event in Reno” and “Best Special Event in Northern Nevada,” and the event continues to live up to the hype time and time again.
