Plan Your Nevada Road Trip

While we’re all stuck indoors, many are dreaming about leaving their Reno homes and traveling across the state. Nevada has beautiful state parks, wonderful attractions, and the best destinations for any solo traveler or family adventure. While you have the time, take the opportunity to plan your Nevada road trip.

Liberty Lake

Located in the Ruby Mountains of Elko County, you’ll be amazed at the views. It offers great trails to hike with beautiful wildflowers blooming in the summer.

Great Basin National Park

The Ancient Bristlecone Pines are some of the oldest trees on the planet. They’ve survived over 5,000 years in thin air, rough soil, and extreme temperature changes.

Black Rock Desert

The Black Rock Desert is known for being the destination of Burning Man year after year, but it’s also one of the largest, flattest surfaces on Earth, covering approximately 200 square miles. When you stand on the playa, you can take in the 360-degree views that you can’t experience anywhere else.

Fly Geyser

Just two hours north of Reno lies the Fly Geyser on Fly Ranch. Three large mounds just over six feet tall and growing several inches each year spew scalding hot water about four or five feet into the air. It’s a sight that looks photoshopped in every picture ever taken of the formation.

Rhyolite Ghost Town

Rhyolite houses the ruins of 1905 gold-mining town, Hollywood movie set, and now a historic site with art installations. There are all kinds of art strewn around the town, and we recommend checking out Tom Kelly’s bottle house – it was built with thousands of medicine, beer, and whiskey bottles.

The International Car Forest

Walk amongst a forest of carefully balanced cars turned into a free, one-of-a-kind gallery of masterful art.

Garnet Hill

This free public recreation area is known for its dark red garnets naturally occurring in the hillsides surrounding Ely. The little gemstones make great souvenirs from your road trip.

The Lost City Museum

The Lost City Museum is a museum with exhibits centered around artifacts recovered from local prehistoric archaeological sites. You can also peer into an authentic pit house or view a reconstructed pueblo cluster.

5 Activities to Keep Kids Busy While You Work From Home

Thousands of workers in Reno and around the world have had to make adjustments and learn how to work from home. For those with kids running around, it can be difficult to keep them entertained long enough to answer your phone and take care of your projects. Here are some activities to keep your kids entertained, so you’re able to focus on your work.

Bean Bag Target Practice

If you don’t have your own cornhole game, you can easily set up a bean bag tossing game of your own using Hoola hoops and laundry baskets. Your kids can spend hours trying to score the most number of points and get all of the bean bags into the targets.

Play MacGyver

Get your family to think outside of the box to make something cool or destroy something. Have your family set up a domino design, then tape a collection of toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls to the wall that you can drop a ball through to get the dominos to topple over. Give your kids a series of materials and ask them to come up with an invention the way MacGyver would.

Set Up an Indoor Golf Course

Grab a fly swatter/stick to putt a sock ball around a series of obstacles to make it into bowls, cups, or baskets. You may not be able to visit the mini-golf course, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring it to your home.

Become Rock Artists

Yards and patios could always do with some color, especially if it comes with a little love from your family. Give your kids washable paint, paintbrushes, and rocks and let the artistry begin. Once they’re dry, your kids can also glue on googly eyes, feathers, or pom poms. You can paint messages, words, wishes, etc. Then you can line them around your garden/yard as a sweet accent for your summer hangouts.

Spider Web Obstacle Course

Using tape, string, or crepe paper streamers, create a spider web maze in a hallway. String the materials across each other and let the kids crawl, twist, and climb their way through the maze. Have them try to make their way through the maze in different ways each time and without touching any of the materials. You can have your kids pretend they’re ninjas or secret agents that need to get through the maze to complete their mission.

The Discovery’s Learning at Home Resources

The Discovery Museum has always been a great place for educational resources to help students learn about the world and find a love for science. They have a Scratch Code Challenge that shows students how to program and awards prizes for the interactive stories, games, movies, and presentations you make. Don’t Stress Over Moving

Moving is never a fun experience. Sure, the thought of starting fresh and making a new space feel like home is exciting, but the process of boxing up your things and coordinating with movers is exhausting. We’ve all been there, but we have some tips on how you can make the move a little easier.

Good things come in twos – You may have heard that it’s best to begin planning for your move two months before the big day and get packing two weeks before. We’re here to tell you that this is the best way to take the stress out of your move. It’s common to want to procrastinate, but when you stretch the process and give yourself little tasks to tackle each day, you’re more likely to enjoy the process.

Make a list of everything you need to take care of – There’s a ton to do before the big move, and if you’re not careful, something can slip through the cracks. Make a checklist of everything you need to do. Include everything from updating your billing address to getting utilities and internet services set up in your new place and canceled in your old one.

Pack room by room – It’s easiest to begin packing up your home room by room, and be sure you label everything. Trust us, you won’t remember which “kitchen stuff” box has the blender that you need to have ready for your morning smoothies, so mark down the room and some of the important things that are in the box.

Measure your furniture – Not every home is created equal. You’ll want to make sure that your current furniture will fit in your new home. Look at the floorplan and begin preparing where items will go in your home. Your future self will thank you if you can drastically reduce the time it takes to unpack your home.

Bike, Hike, and the Like

The fickle Reno and Tahoe weather can sometimes put a damper on your plans to get outdoors, but with so many trails, parks, and open landscapes, it’s a crime to stay indoors. So, before the first snowfall and on the days that the sun isn’t hidden by gloomy rain clouds, we have some spots you should explore!

Mountain Biking Spots:

Tahoe Rim Trail offers a variety of terrain to suit a variety of riders at any skill level. Want to find some sand and silt, a few steep climbs, and downhill descents to try out? This trail has it all!
Picnic Rock Vista Ride is great for anyone looking for a leisure bike ride that offers some great sights. This 3-mile trip will ensure you leave with some great shots of Lake Tahoe and the pine forests that surround it.
Dry Pond Loop is a mountain biking spot at the base of Mount Rose with a challenging climb and an exhilarating descent. If it sounds too challenging for two wheels, you can try it on two feet — this spot is popular for hikers and joggers as well.
Hidden Valley Regional Park has a few mountain biking trail loops to choose from. Backcountry Loop will give your legs a workout, but Perimeter Loop and Highland Trail are great for beginner and intermediate riders.

Hiking Spots:

Bartley Ranch Loop Trail has some great views that overlook the city. You’ll be happy to reach the top of this 1.5-mile hike, trust us.
Hunter Creek Trail covers a variety of terrain, but at the end of the hike, there’s a big reward: a waterfall! The hike is just a little shy of 6 miles and is sure to get your heart pumping.
Peavine Peak Trail is perfect for the experienced hiker, and you can bring your four-legged best friend with you! The dog-friendly trail covers 8.5 miles and has an elevation gain of 2,834 feet. The views of Reno and Sparks that are unlike any other.
Cross Peak Trail is where you should go if you’re looking for the perfect photo opportunity. Save energy for the last quarter mile, it’s steep!

Event Spotlight: Great Reno Balloon Races

Reno offers so many visually appealing attractions, but none are more well known and beloved than the Great Reno Balloon Races – the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning event.

The three-day event kicks off September 6th and goes through the weekend. Before the event is over, you’re sure to catch more than just a glimpse of dozens of hot air balloons taking flight and dotting the sky with a variety of colors.

When the Great Reno Balloon Races first started in 1982, there were close to 20 balloons that soared above the city, but today there up to 100 balloons flying high around town. This community tradition is truly a spectacle and residents and tourists bond over their lack of sleep and desire for some strong coffee as they sit and watch the balloons take flight during Dawn Patrol.

Friday – Sunday, gates to the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park will open at 3:30 AM for the Super Glow Show to start at 5:00 and the Dawn Patrol to begin at 5:30 AM. It’s recommended to get there early to get a good seat and be sure to bundle up! The mornings can be a little more than brisk, but it can warm up once the sun peaks out during Dawn Patrol.

If you and your family would like to see the sky covered in balloons, stick around until 7 AM, when the pilots will have a mass ascension and take off in swarms to color the sky.

Just North of Downtown Reno, more than 120,000 spectators will gather over the three-day period to watch a show that gets bigger and better year after year. The Great Reno Balloon Races have even been awarded the “Best Special Event in Reno” and “Best Special Event in Northern Nevada,” and the event continues to live up to the hype time and time again.
