How to Spend Your Valentine’s Day in Reno

Valentine’s Day Creativity Kits – Arts for All released creativity kits that feature three projects for kids to do. They can be used as Valentine’s Day gifts or something that they simply keep for themselves. All art supplies are included in the kit, and they will even have access to videos that help walk your child through the activity.

Valentine’s Day with Significant Other

Valentine’s Day Dining at The Row – The Roxy and La Strada are both offering special dine-in Valentine’s Day dinner menus. The Roxy is offering a choice between sea bass and beef wellington for the entree, as well as a few starters and desserts. La Strada’s Valentine’s Day menu features a baby spinach salad, artichoke ravioli, veal tenderloin “Oscar,” and black truffle chocolate gelato.

Valentine’s Day with Friends

Galentine’s Day Jewelry Making Party – In this virtual workshop, you’ll design your own jewelry using a variety of beads and charms. Each participant can make two necklaces, bracelets, or earrings.

Take a Virtual Mixology Class – Make the most of your Valentine’s Day with friends by taking a virtual mixology class to learn how to create your very own delicious cocktails.

Take a Yoga Class – Take a little time for yourself and spend the day relaxing with friends. There are a variety of yoga classes available on Valentine’s Day. The Studio, Yoga Pod, and The Temple are all great places to check out.

How to Spend Spooktober in Reno

When October starts, every bump in the night makes you wonder if a witch is taking an evening flight. It’s a time for ghost stories, “Monster Mash” dance parties, and maybe even a few movies starring Jason Voorhees. There are so many things to do and different ways to spend Spooktober in Reno. Sierra Safari Zoo

Every weekend in October is Boo at the Zoo. There will be kid-friendly activities like a slide, hay maze, petting zoo, and more. Pro tip: Check out the Spookaroo at the Zoo event on October 30 and 31.

Adelin Family Farms

The family-friendly corn maze, pony/horse rides, pumpkin patch, and U-Pick sunflowers make the Fall Harvest Festival a must-visit, but the Corn Creepers Haunted Attraction and Zombie Paintball make Adelin Family Farms the perfect destination to get into the Halloween spirit.

PumpkinPalooza

Want a little adventure and an activity the whole family can get in on? Check out the Purple Pumpkin Pursuit presented by PumpkinPalooza. West Wind Drive-In

13 Nights of Fright is taking place October 19-31. West Wind Drive-In will be showing family-friendly Halloween flicks as well as some classic horror films. Take your family movie night to the drive-in!

Virginia City

As a city that wears its hauntings as a badge of honor, it would only make sense that they would go all out for Halloween. The month-long celebration is called Hauntober, and there are ghost tours, train rides, and more to enjoy.

The History of Hot August Nights

Usually, businesses, hotels, and venues would be prepping for one of Reno’s most well-known events, Hot August Nights. This year the event has been postponed until 2021. This is the first time in its 34 year history that the event has been postponed, but it’s been making its mark on our community’s history for years. Let’s take a look back.

How did Hot August Nights get its start?

On August 1, 1986, the Reno-Sparks Convention Center was hosting a live event featuring the Righteous Brothers, Wolfman Jack, and Jan & Dean. The event drew in thousands of spectators, and the nostalgia of the event had many talking about the classic cars and music of the 50s and 60s. It was decided that it was something that should be celebrated yearly, and because the event took place on a hot August night, the event practically named itself.

The first Hot August Nights was more of a throwback concert in the parking lot of the Convention Center to raise money for local charities, but the nostalgic feeling it brought sparked the idea of what it could be and what it has turned into.

Hot August Nights Now

That first party with 10,000 spectators has now turned into a flurry of festivities taking place throughout Reno, Sparks, and Virginia City at the beginning of August and drawing in over 800,000 people year after year. Hot August Nights continues to breed nostalgia for the 50s and 60s and celebrates classic cars and good ole rock n’ roll music.

Hot August Nights Foundation

The first Hot August Nights was created to help raise money for local charities, and nonprofit work is still a part of the Hot August Nights legacy. They created their own foundation in 2007 in order to provide children in need with funds and resources to help them with their education. The Hot August Nights Foundation helps provide:

Scholarships for secondary education including colleges, trade schools, junior colleges, and vocational schools.
Support to primary schools and its students in areas of economic hardship and, particularly, where children are at risk of not completing their education.
Promotion and support for other worthy educational and assistance programs for in-need and at-risk children.

Reno has a rich history, and we’re proud that Hot August Nights is a part of that history. We’re excited for its return next year! 10 Events to Go Mad For This March

Basketball isn’t the only event to get excited for this spring, especially in Reno and the surrounding areas. There are a ton of great shows, concerts, and festivals to check out come March, so be sure to check out our list of activities worth putting in your calendar.

1. Snowfest! – Feb. 28 – Mar. 8

North Lake Tahoe becomes a flurry of activities and events for people of all ages at this large Mardi Gras style festival. Check out the events happening here.

2. TLC – Mar. 6

Come and listen to the classic stylings of TLC and belt along to “Waterfalls,” “Creep,” “No Scrubs,” and “Unpretty.”

3. The Beach Boys – Mar. 7

With more than 50 years of making music under their belts, there’s no doubt that The Beach Boys put on a legendary show you can’t see anywhere else.

4. Lynyrd Skynyrd – Mar. 14

Sixty records later and Lynyrd Skynyrd is still tearing up the stage to put on a fun concert dedicated to the best Southern Rock songs that will always get people up and singing.

5. Reno Leprechaun Crawl – Mar. 14

Get dressed up, enjoy some great discount drinks at 20 different downtown locations, and participate in a few free giveaways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style!

6. 8th annual Leprechaun Race – Mar. 15

Grab the whole family and take part in a fun 5K through Midtown and the Wells Avenue District. If you beat Race178’s official leprechaun, you get a special prize!

7. Monster Jam – Mar. 20 – 22

Watch as these monster trucks tear up the tracks in a fierce competition full of all kinds of tricks. You’ll be able to see the trucks up close and take photos with the drivers.

8. Rob Lowe – Mar. 21

Rob Lowe is here to discuss the rises and falls he’s experienced throughout his lifetime. Take a glimpse into what it was like to be a child actor and power that into a long and successful career in Hollywood.

9. WinterWonderGrass – Mar. 27 – 29

Squaw Valley will transform the North Tahoe location into a festival of music, beer tasting, and fun. Make memories and tap into the side of you with deep bluegrass roots.

10. BANDSTAND – Mar. 27 – 29

Travel back to 1945 and watch as soldiers coming back from World War II are faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives before they were deployed, but somehow find their voices in music and a competition to become the nation’s next great musical superstars.

How to Ring in the New Year in Reno

With the hours before we say goodbye to 2019 dwindling, it’s time to start your preparations on how to ring in the new year in Reno! The new decade is going to bring changes that will continue to shape the community, so why not get dressed up and welcome it in style?

Downtown Reno always knows how to throw a party, and New Year’s is no exception. Silver Legacy at THE ROW is running with a 1920’s theme. It only seems fair to pay tribute to the jazz clubs, sparkly fashion, and crisp cocktails that paved the way for 2020. This centennial celebration brings all the hope of the future while paying tribute to the legacy of the past, and it’s sure to make for a memorable new year!

The Nugget is hosting a variety of events that include free entertainment starting as early as 8 PM. DJ Milton Merlos will be playing at the Lobby Bar, and the Celebrity Showroom will host a dance party featuring Gruve Nation. For those looking for a truly unique experience, be sure to catch Cirque Musica Holiday Wishes performance in the Nugget Ballroom!

The Peppermill will be a festival of free champagne and party favors on the casino floor as it gets closer to midnight, but the real party will take place in the Capri Ballroom. The Party in Pink New Year’s Eve Party is a twist on the 80’s classic, Pretty in Pink. Dance along to your favorite 80’s hits and bring along your besties. It’s not a party without Duckie, after all.

If you’re looking to keep your New Year’s lowkey by hosting a party of your own, don’t miss the fireworks show from three different rooftops in Downtown Reno. The pop of color will ensure that your night ends with a bang and brings hope that 2020 will burn bright.

Event Spotlight: Great Reno Balloon Races

Reno offers so many visually appealing attractions, but none are more well known and beloved than the Great Reno Balloon Races – the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning event.

The three-day event kicks off September 6th and goes through the weekend. Before the event is over, you’re sure to catch more than just a glimpse of dozens of hot air balloons taking flight and dotting the sky with a variety of colors.

When the Great Reno Balloon Races first started in 1982, there were close to 20 balloons that soared above the city, but today there up to 100 balloons flying high around town. This community tradition is truly a spectacle and residents and tourists bond over their lack of sleep and desire for some strong coffee as they sit and watch the balloons take flight during Dawn Patrol.

Friday – Sunday, gates to the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park will open at 3:30 AM for the Super Glow Show to start at 5:00 and the Dawn Patrol to begin at 5:30 AM. It’s recommended to get there early to get a good seat and be sure to bundle up! The mornings can be a little more than brisk, but it can warm up once the sun peaks out during Dawn Patrol.

If you and your family would like to see the sky covered in balloons, stick around until 7 AM, when the pilots will have a mass ascension and take off in swarms to color the sky.

Just North of Downtown Reno, more than 120,000 spectators will gather over the three-day period to watch a show that gets bigger and better year after year. The Great Reno Balloon Races have even been awarded the “Best Special Event in Reno” and “Best Special Event in Northern Nevada,” and the event continues to live up to the hype time and time again.
